IVF Procedures
Prior to the patient undergoing anesthesia, the embryologist will actually come to the room and introduced themselves to the patient. Once the patient undergoes the anesthesia and in deep sleep then we will start the procedure. The procedure will start with the cleansing of vagina. We will put speculum in and we’ll just flush the vagina with saline or water (the way of cleansing the vagina). We don’t recommend using betadine because Betadine can be harmful to egg.
Ultrasound Probe for IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure
Setting up ultrasound probe with a sterile probe cover, the tubing and the needle. There is a little hole through the needle guide, so this is where we’ll introduce the needle through. The needle will just rest above the probe until once the ultrasound probe is in the vagina. It will go through the wall and into the ovary.
Once it’s in the ovary we always align the ultrasound probe with the follicle we’re aiming to go into. Once we’re in that follicle, we’ll step on a pedal, and this will activate the vacuum section. We are essentially vacuum suctioning the fluid out of each follicle. It will travel through the tubing into the test tube, and we hand the test tube to the embryologist.
Using a microscope, they will identify the eggs and will give us a running count and how many eggs that they are able to identify during the procedure. We try to use one puncture side for each ovary. So once that first follicle is collapsed, we’ll move on to the next follicle until we’ve gone through all of the follicles in that ovary and removed as many eggs as we can from that side’s ovary.
What Next?
We will flush out the needle and move on to the other ovary and do the same thing where we go through as many follicles as we can to remove as many eggs as we can. After that the procedure is pretty much complete but we do want to make sure that there’s no bleeding. We will put the speculum back in and look at puncture sites and make sure they are hemostatic (not bleeding). We will sometimes use some medication at the site or rarely put in a stitch. Usually, the bleeding is minimal that takes to risk of an egg retrieval.
IVF Info: Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure that still have rest so the risk of bleeding infection damage to nearby organs. That includes the bladder above and then the bowel. The chance of risk to any of these structures are very low.
After The IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure?
Immediately after the IVF egg retrieval, it can be like waking up from a nice nap. You’ll be able to drink a little bit or eat a little bit. The recovery from the anesthesia it takes about 10 minutes to wake from the sedation and usually recover for about 30 minutes. So, the total amount that you’re at the facility for the procedure is usually around 2 hours.
Ready to go Home
Now you are ready to go home and need a ride after a successful IVF egg retrieval procedure, you’ll know the number of eggs that were retrieved before you leave that day. The embryologist will keep you updated in terms of the number of eggs that were matured, how many fertilized and how the embryos are growing in the subsequent days. It is normal after the procedure to have some light bleeding and also some cramping, so we would expect these types of things after the procedure.
The Recovery Time and OHSS After IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure
The recovery time for an egg retrieval is usually 24 hours. However, there are certain patients that are at increased risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). Patient that are higher risk of OHSS are young patient with a low BMI, high AMH, high follicle count. When they’re going through the IVF process, high follicle number and high estrogen level.
If you are a patient at risk for OHSS are to be more worsening abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and shortness of breath. Apart from that, you also will get decreased urine output, and increasing weight gain. It is important to keep your hospital updated if you experienced these symptoms.
IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure Info 1
- The symptoms if you at risk for OHSS, it can flare up after the retrieval and after 7 to 10 days after the egg retrieval. Moderate and severe symptoms are required further treatment. Drink a lot of fluids like Gatorade and high protein diet. These will help to alleviate some of those symptoms.
IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure Info 2
- Each follicle in theory has a microscopic egg that we can’t see so as removing the fluid the egg should come with it.
What’s Next After IVF Egg Retrieval Procedure?
After IVF retrieval procedure is done, the embryologist will keep you updated on how the embryos are progressing. During the egg retrieval day, you will know how many eggs can be retrieved. The next day or Day 1, you will be updated by your embryologist on: –
- How many eggs were mature?
- How many eggs were fertilized?
On Day 2 and Day 3 after the procedure, you will get information such as how many cells are dividing in the embryo. The embryologist doesn’t check the embryos on Day 4 but on Day 5/Day 6, they will let you know how many blastocysts. The doctor (physician) and patient will discuss about the next process. And the process that can be happened are: –
- Fresh embryos transfer.
- Frozen embryos transfer.
- Biopsing the embryos for pre-implantation genetic testing.
- Freezing the embryos.
You will need to take a medication for fresh embryos transfer. If you are frozen embryos transfer, the patient will basically wait for the next period and can take up to 1 to 2 weeks. If the patient is doing genetic testing, the result will usually take about 2 weeks. The doctor will setup a follow-up visits with you about 3 weeks after the egg retrieval. Anticipate the result and review the result with the patient and figure out what next steps from there.
During the visit, you and your doctor will correlate with the probability of live birth.

What is Blastocyst?
Blastocyst is the beginning development stage as fertilized eggs. The egg will develop from early stage of blastocyst to embryos and then a fetus.
Please be reminded that you will know how the mature eggs, but we won’t know the quality of those eggs. Not all of the mature eggs are good quality. The probability tables will help to understand what correlate to in terms of percentage of live birth. If you are not happy with the percentage, your doctor and physician will review the cycle and gather information from the IVF cycle. If the patient wants to try the process again to increase the number of eggs they have, so that you can increase your probability of live birth for the future.
At the end, you should be ready to be informed on best case scenarios or worst-case scenarios and just moving forward as optimistic.
